William Huntington, Sr., was born on March 28, 1784, in New Grantham, New Hampshire. He lived in New Hampshire until 1805, when he married Zina Baker (1786-1839). The couple moved to Watertown, New York, in 1806. The War of 1812 left the family reduced almost to poverty, as a result of which William turned to religion for solace.
